While we provide a range of pallets at DJ Pallets, some of our biggest clients need graded GMA pallets. GMA grades are overseen by the Grocery Manufacturers Association, which sets the standard for the shipping of consumer goods.
If you're shipping consumer goods, understanding the different grades for GMA pallets is important. At DJ Pallets, we'll help you understand the different grades and help you pick the best one for your shipping needs.

Grade A Pallets
Compared to grade B pallets, grade A pallets are more consistent in size and appearance. These pallets never have block repairs made to the stringers. In general, these pallets have fewer cycles than their grade B counterparts.
The exact specifications include:
- Seven top boards
- Five bottom boards
- Top deck spacing between 2.5 inches and 3.5 inches
- Three stringers
- Four-way entry
- Flush
- Stringers without block repairs
- One repair plate allowed per stringer in case of split
Premium Grade A Pallets
Premium grade A pallets have the same uses and specifications as normal grade A pallets. However, there are a few updated features worth noting.
- 6-inch lead boards on top and bottom
- Stringers without paint or color
This allows these premium pallets to be used for the most sensitive shipping needs. They are commonly used for floor displays and while shipping pharmaceuticals and other products that require a clean shipping environment.
Grade B Pallets
Grade B pallets are less expensive than grade A pallets, and that's reflected in the nature of their construction. Grade B pallets tend to be used in warehouses or for shipping. In these settings, grade B pallets are generally not going to be reused.
The exact specification include:
- Six or seven top boards
- At least four bottom boards
- Top deck spacing can be up to 4 inches
- Three stringers
- Four-way entry
- Flush
- Stringers can use plugs for repairs
- Different lengths and locations
- Two-boards thick at any one point
- Chips and partially split boards are acceptable
Premium Grade B Pallets
Premium grade B pallets are a step up from standard grade B pallets. The specifications are the same except for the stringer repairs. For premium grade B pallets, only one stringer can have repairs. However, there can be multiple repairs to that same stringer in order to still qualify as premium grade B.
Although premium grade B pallets are more affordable than grade A pallets, they have fewer transfer cycles than the standard grade B options. This means the pallets will have less damage and fewer imperfections.
